Seventy years ago the last surviving Georgia slaves, living witnesses to plantation life, were growing old. This was the last opportunity to learn the details and emotions of slavery from people who actually lived it. Interviewers from the Federal Writers' Project were dispatched to record these unique experiences. This collection of recollections portrays slavery not as an inflexible system of law and economics, but as a human situation where masters and slaves had to get along together because they were ultimately dependent on each other. The book is illustrated with late-nineteenth-century photographs which evoke Southern plantation life.
